Question
i have a 110 extra tall that has been established for almost a year now... freshwater... well in the last few weeks i have been having problems with the water turning green and cloudy.. i have done numerous water changes, put in clear water chemicals, and other type stuff, tested the water and had stores test it... the only problem i had was ammonia toxin which i fixed, and water hardness which is borderline. i have lost 15 fish so far and had to put 3 fish in a seperate tank to nurse them back from the ammonia toxin... the fish that died had the symptoms of chlorine to high.. which i fixed.. we have used different chemicals and nothing works for more than a day. we have changed all the filter cartridges several times and cleaned everything.... only feeding them very little to keep all that down... i am running a rena 3 filter system on it which is made for a 175 gallon tank which should be more than big enough for this tank...
i am stumped as to what is wrong with it and was hoping you could help us out with it.... any information would be greatly needed...i have been doing freshwater and salt water tanks for about 10 years now and have never run into this before....
thank you

Answer
Hello Donnia,

When you say green water I read that as stand alone algae, Which can make the water cloudy. Is what happens when you kill off algae using chemicals or cloudy water removers, ect is that it kills the bacteria and that releases protein and more. This is where the problems start. So I would store your fish into another tank and then do a full clean  using clorox of all the plants, filter, and everything to try and get rid of the stuff in the tank that will grow the algae. This should solve the problem.

Thanks,
