Question
Hi I have a 48 litre freshwater, heated tank. It has 4 little fish which have been in for 4 weeks now.  I check the ammonia and nitrite levels daily and find ammonia anything between 1-8 but never any nitrites. I do daily water changes amount depends on ammonia levels and I have tried not feeding for few days but still ammonia levels up but no nitrites detected! I understand I need to get nitrites up to get ammonia down then nitrates will take care of nitrite levels. My nitrate levels are 10-25. Luckily the fish seem fine and I did fishless cycling of tank for 2 months before they went in!! What am I doing wrong? Hope you can help thanks.

Answer
With the water changes you are doing are not allowing the water to cycle properly. Most times, in aquariums over 10 gallons you will see a spike in ammonia, then it will drop and nitrite will spike and then go down as the tank cycles building the beneficial bacteria. By removing the water and adding water you causing the cycle to not be allowed to complete. I would monitor the water conditions as you have been but try not to change the water until the tank has a chance to fix it on it's own.
Being you have smaller size tank this is actually something you will have a battle with frequently. I would still let it attempt to correct itself with continuing your close observations.
Keep up the attentiveness to your tank and happy fish keeping.
