i have a ten gallon aquarium, and i would like to give it a more natural look by adding real rocks(not as gravel, as decoration). i don't want to just put in rocks without doing anything to them, but i don't know what i should do. i have heard that boiling them works. do you have any advice about what i should do?

Hi Blake,

Boiling will definitely work, if it is a suitable rock for aquarium use. The key is to avoid rocks that will drastically alter water chemistry. Limestone will change the water's pH, as will a large amount of seashells. There are some rocks you should always avoid - rocks that have veins of metal in them, such as fool's gold.
