-----Question-----
what kind of filter system is best for 29 gal freshwater tank. community style tank.
-----Answer-----
Hi Richard
You'll want a filter(s) that will put out a minimum of 300 gph(gallons per hour).  I would go more then that though, 5-600 gph. You can't over filter.  Maybe consider using 2 filters.  I run 2 filters on all but my 15 & 10 gallon tanks.

With that size tank, and a community tank, I think a HOB(hang on the back) filter would be perfect.  I've seen a lot of people say they like the Aqua Clear brand.  I've had them, they were good, they had a lot of space to add extra filter media to it; like sponges, bacteria bio balls, etc.  Only problem I had with that brand, when I lived in Florida, we had a lot of power surges from the daily thunderstorms.  The filters couldn't handle the power surges and would stop working.

I've had pretty good luck with the Penguin Biowheels though.  I've used all different sizes for a 5 gallon up to their biggest size.  Only thing with them, eventually the wheel will stop turning, usually it's just bogged down/dirty though.  But as a whole, the filters have held up good for several years now.

Thanks for the question!!

Answer
Hi Richard
I'm sorry, I don't know what algone is, I'm guessing some kind of chemical-what's it for?  And, why do you want to use a denitrator?  I guess to remove nitrates lol?  If you do weekly water changes of at least 25-30%, that will keep your nitrates down, and it's much better then using chemicals in your tank!
