Question
I had a graumi with scab looking spots with worm looking things coming out of the biggest spot. I put her in a hospital with the other female cause she showed some spots. After treating for about a month they look much worse with red veins all over.  I gave up and got rid of them now my male shows signs with a spot and some veins showing. What is it and can I treat it and how? Thank you

Answer
Hi Peggy
It may be anchor worms.  Do the worms have a "forked tail", split in two at the ends?  The worms are usually white, green, brownish red, or clear colored, and usually where they're attached to the fish there's a red spot/sore.  You can physically remove the worms with a pair of tweezers, or you can buy some medicine that'll remove the worms in a few days.  Regardless which treatment option you choose, after it's completed, pick up some aquarium salt and some MelaFix.  Treat the tank with thoose according to directions.  Those 2 items I just mentioned will help prevent bacterial or fungal infections from forming on the fish.
I've got a good link with different treatment options, you'll need to copy and paste to your browser.

I would also notify the pet store where you bought the gouramis.  I'd say they're most likely having a problem with one of their breeders.  That's probably where this originated from.

Good luck!!

Sorry, I just noticed about the red veins on the fish.  That could be septicemia, basically where bacteria enters the fish's body through a sore/wound.  You'll need to treat with a medicated anti bacterial(antibiotic) fish food.  If you can't find that at your pet store, and can find a broad spectrum antibiotic, you can soak some of the food in the antibiotic with a little tank water mixed in.
