Question
hi Chris,
just a quick question about my Beta fish...i've had him for about 4 months in a standard gold fish bowl (no filtration system). i change his water every week (the man at the pet store recommended using bottled water, so i fill it up with room temp. Poland Spring water), but i have noticed that his underside and the botton of his chin have changed from a bright red to a dull tan color. he is eating normally, and i haven't noticed any other problems. what could cause this color change? i know its been getting colder, and i thought that might contribute to it, so i wrapped his bowl with a towel, and make sure he has indirect sunlight during the day. any other suggestions?
thank you,
Michelle

Answer
Hi Michelle;

It is probably from low temperature. It is very common in winter to experience this. You might try putting a lamp close to his bowl to help get the temperature higher. Many people have success putting the bowl between books in a bookcase for insulation. Having a light below on the next shelf will raise it up too. Just watch to be sure it stays safe.

Followups welcome
