Sick Betta on side, weak, cant eat

Question
I have a betta that I've had for over three years. I keep him in a gallon of spring water. I've learned recently about the warm water requirement for him, he is not currently kept in warm water...it's at room temperature. Recently my fish has become black in color, seems weak on one side and today is laying on his side. For two days he does not seem to be able to find his food. I have crushed his food and he is able to get something that way but he seems almost dead. He can swim but is very weak. Is there anything I can do?

Answer
Hi Debbie;

Poor guy. I'm so sorry he has been going through this. He is a very old little fish and it may just be 'his time'. Bettas live to be 2 or 3 years old and are already about a year old when you buy them in the store. He has lived a very long life under your wonderful care.

You can try putting him in a warmer place and/or put a light close to his tank to get the temperature up higher. It might make him feel better for a little while.

Hoping for the best......
