Betta problem

Question
Hi! About 2 months ago, we purchased a blue betta fish named Blu, for my son.  We also purchased a Aqueon betta bow 2.5 gallon aquarium kit.  The aquarium was set up as per the included directions. We have been changing 25% of the water as directed once a month.  And we have changed the filter 2 times.

The past 2 days, Blu is not eating.  He comes up to the surface, I drop a pellet or two of Aqueon betta food, and he does not ingest it.

Should we be worried for his health?  What can we do to make sure that we provide the best environment for out Blu?

Thank you.

Answer
Jennifer,
Your Betta is a tropical fish and needs his water to be 80 to 82 degrees at all times. Also, 25% water changes have to be done once a week. I would also remove the filter since it is not doing anything beneficial for your Betta. When doing filter changes, it is best to let the new filter media floating in the tank for 2 to 3 days before placing it in the filter. This way, the beneficial bacteria has started in the new filter. I believe that your Betta will improve if you
1. use a heater, even in the summer months.
2. remove the filter and
3. do water changes weekly.
Blu can go for 2 weeks without food, and I think the problem is water temperature.
