Question
QUESTION: Renee,
I finally got my goldfish sold! All of them! Now I only have 2 green tiger barbs and 3 dalmatian Mollies in my 8 gallon tank. That's okay, right?

ANSWER: That's fantastic and a great start to the right sized population for an aquarium. :)

QUESTION: So... does that mean the dalmatian Mollies will spawn and deliver?

ANSWER: Hi Manahil,

Mollies do not spawn.  They are livebearers.  They do not lay eggs.

The definition of spawning is - egg laying.

Mollies' babies develop inside the fish and are born alive and swim almost the minute they hit the water.  So, like we do, they give live birt to their babies.

One day, you will wake up and little fishes will be all over the place, swimming. :)

QUESTION: That is a dream come true. Can you tell how many babies there will be? How will I be able to save the babies from getting eaten? How big will they be?

Do you think it is possible, likely or almost certain?

Answer
If you have males, and females, it will happen.  Mollies are very prolific fish.  They are like rabbits.  They breed very well.

The babies will be around 1/3" when born.  Small, but you will be able to tell that they are fish.

They may not get eaten if you provide lots of hiding places for them.
