My betta has popeye and wont eat

Question
Dear Amber,
I am desperate to save my betta. He has popeye, and I think I caught it to late. I think it may be to late for him, but i want to do whatever is in my power to at least try to save him. I bought him Maracyn 2, and he seems to be just a tad bit better. He has a 2gallon tank all for himself, and I removed all of his little decorations, and left nothing but rocks. He doesn't eat at all. The last time he ate was about 4 or 5 days ago, and he's been swimming sideways for about 5 or 6 days. He seems to attempt swimming downwards, but keeps floating upwards and stays in a corner. He also seems to want to eat, but he can't see his food. I also noticed that he seems to be grasping for air. He is pretty much lifeless, and the only time he moves, is in an awkward circle. I really don't want him to suffer, but I don't want to kill him. Please, what should I do to get him eating, at least the smallest amount? Is it to late for him? If so, what should I do to make his remaining time as painless, and comfortable as possible?

Answer
Hello Kelly-

Are his eyes actually popped out? This sounds more like a swim bladder problem than a visual problem, but either way, I'll try to help!

1.) Add a dose of aquarium salt to the tank. This will help kill off any bacteria, and promote healing.

2.) Keep up with the Maracyn, if you have any left.

3.) Remove the old water, but do not wash the rocks. Add fresh, clean warm water. Remember to use water conditioner! Try to keep the temperature near 80-85 F.

4.) Feed him a pea. Yup, a pea. Get one and let it defrost, squeeze it out of its shell, and dab it in garlic powder. The garlic will encourage your betta to eat it. Peas are great for bettas who have trouble swimming, as they are a laxative that removes any pressure on the swim bladder.

5.) Put the pea on a rounded toothpick, and put it right near his nose. See if he'll eat it.

6.) If he won't eat, you'll need to try to force feed him. Be as gentle as possible. Try to raise him out of the water so his mouth opens, and then place a mouthful of mushed pea inside.

I hope this works for you. Bettas can go weeks without food, so he will not die of starvation.

Email me at abworman@purdue.edu after you attempt to feed him, and I will give you more advice.

Hope this is helpful.
