Question
QUESTION: Hi-
I have some fish problems that need to be sorted out, and I was wondering if you could help me solve them. :) I have no idea what kinds of fish to put with each other. I have one angel fish, one glo-fish, one molly, and one red sword-tail. My second angel got recently eaten by the other fish-and I have no idea why or how. I think it was my molly, because she showed aggressive behavior before. I feel badly that my angel fish is all alone, because it is basically the only timid one, and they don't like to be alone without their own kind. Also, I have an algae problem. Should I get a snail or a "sucker" fish to be a bottom feeder and eat the algae? What should I do about all of this?
Thanks,
-Tina

ANSWER: Hi Tina:  What probably occurred is that one of the angelfish was sick and died and then everyone started eating it... fish are their own best friends...  You also have a bunch of shoaling fish that are alone.... Angelfish, glofish, molly's and swordtails all should be in small shoals. The sword fish need to have at least two and preferably three, the angels should be in sets of three, the glofish in sets of 4-6 and the molly in sets of three.  For algae I recommend a clean sponge that has no soap or antibacterial agents on it.  How many hours of day does your tank get light???? dave

QUESTION: Thank you so much........ my tank gets about 13 hours of light per day, but I decrease it daily (because I know it causes algae) . How many more fish can I put into my tank to even out the species (angelfish, glofish) in my 10 gallon tank. I already have four. Also, how large do angelfish grow to be?
Thanks again so much....
Tina

Answer
Hi:  The angelfish can grow up to 10-12 inches including fins and tail... with a body about 4 inches across.  They do not do well in ten gallon tanks when they get to be medium sized and larger.  This is primarily due to the fact that they are mid-level fish and smaller tanks place them too near the surface where predators may lurk.  Your goal for your tank should be ten inches off fish... so add fish that are going to equal ten inches when they are full grown.  dave
