whats wrong with my fish?

I Have a big orange fish can't remember what kind it is, but lately he's being floating side ways, he floats in only one side of the tank does not eat very well and theres also a long brownish string coming out of him?

Hi Candy,
 The long brownish string is perfectly fine.   The fact that he floats sideways is not.

  Have you been doing regular weekly partial water changes?  You should be changing 25% of his water once a week, every week, to keep him happy and healthy.
