Question
I have 4 fish in a i don't know a 5 gallon tank. I got them Thursday November 5 and my molly was big then. She ate the first day BUT NOT SINCE THEN. I had my dad look at her and he said she was pregnant! I did some research and it said to set her away from the fish. I got a tank and put her in there{i did this on Sunday}.Yesterday we got some plants to put in there. She hasn't eaten and is really big. Kinda boxy shape too. She has this white dot on her butt. What is that? she stays in a corner then swims to another corner and then sometimes at the bottom swimming around. Is she close to birth? How long dose it take? What are the signs she is ready and will give birth? She hasn't had them yet and it will be almost a week. Can you help me?

Answer
Hi Zach,
4 fish in a 5 gallon tank is too many fish.  Mollys need bigger tanks, with alkaline water, and one teaspoon diluted aquarium salt for 2 gallons of water.  Mollys need room to swim when giving birth to their fry.  They also need cycled tanks.  This means that a tank should cycle first with a filter before adding a molly to your water.  It should have zero ammonia, zero nitrites, and nitrates should be low.  Your molly should be in 7.8PH or higher.  All fish need cycled tanks, or they die.  Never add 4 fish to a five gallon tank at once.  If you checked your water chemistry right now, you would find high levels of ammonia, and nitrites.  These are poison to fish.  The only right way to cycle a tank is to let it run for 4-6 weeks with no fish in it, and a used sponge that you buy from your pet store.  If you fish survive, it will be a miracle...I hope they do...but odds are against them.
She has a white dot because she is pregnant.  I really don't know when she will have them, this is anybody's guess.  If you see that your fish are not doing well, the kindest thing to do would be to bring them back to the pet store, and let your tanks cycle.
I hope you understand, and this will somehow help you.
