Question

fish
A friend gave me a new aquarium fish and I'm having trouble identifying it. It is medium sized, silver-ish, has spotted fins, and it has a "bottle nose" as my husband calls it...it's head looks like it ran into a bottle. :) It's fins run along the entire body also.

Answer
Hi Kim,
This is an "Australian Rainbow Fish"  ( Melanotaenia fluviatilis )  They are peacful fish, and should be kept in groups of six.  Their are many beautiful rainbow fish, and they will all mix, so it really doesn't matter which ones you buy, but they must be kept in groups.  They are active swimmers, so need space to swim.  They should be in 60 gallon tanks.  You can read all about them on the web by putting in their name.  They are beautiful, especially if their is a male in the mix.  Two males would be just right to 4 females.  The males are usually more colourful, but if you add more males, they will always harass the female, which would stress her, and eventually make her very weak.
I hope this will help.
