Eating Eggs?

Question
Hi, I have a pair (male & female) of Zebra Finches. We've had these birds for a
month, and have noticed something strange happening. For 4 days, we saw
eggs. Now, the eggs are gone and there are small traces of yolk in the nest,
but no shell.

Would they have eaten the eggs? I tried to do a bit of research on this topic
but found nothing. Maybe you can help!!

Thanks,

Katie

Answer
They may have eaten the eggs. I am not sure. I know that all finch species make good parents. That could be the case with your zebras. I have never heard of this before but it wouldn't surprise me. Cats have an instinct to kill and eat their own young if they are weak or deformed. The same could be the case with finches.
If you are trying to breed them and get babies I suggest a pair of societies as foster parents. But keep societies in a separate cage from the finches because zebras and societies are so close in genetics that they can breed and give birth to an infertile female.
If the samething happens with to the eggs with societies than you know something is wrong with the eggs.
You can get societies from places like Pjs and Petsmart. Or any other place you know has birds. The place I would suggest that I know about is Pjs for their birds seem to be more healthy than Petsmart's but higher in price. If you do not mind nursing intentionally sick birds back to heath and taking to them to vet if needed, then I suggest Petsmart because their prices are much lower.
