Eight in One bath spray for birds

Question
Thanks for the advice.   She does get her excerises by flying around and is on the pellets, I just thought she needs to have a bath once or twice a week.   You are right about these companies, they do not know much about birds but they sell products for the birds or any animal for that matter.

Thanks again,

Tony

Hi Chrys,

I bought Eight in One bath spray for my lovebird, and I have noticed the feathers ruffle up alittle.

I have read the ingredient in the back and it contains Isopropyl Myristate which is alcohol that penetrates the skin, now isn't this unsafe for a bird?

I have used Canopy Scientific bath spray in the pass and my lovebird feather shined and I have also noticed in their label that they do not use Isopropyl because its harmful to birds.

I guess my question is, why would a brand like Eight in One which is well know would use Isopropyl in their bath spray for birds, unless it is safe?

Thanks,

Tony

Hi, Tony.  Thanks for posting.

Why do you use bath spray at all on your bird?  It isn't necessary if your lovebird gets proper exercise, has the required type of lighting and/or direct sunlight, has a proper diet, etc.

I don't really know if isopropyl myristate is good or bad for parrots...I've never researched this or had anyone ask the question.  However, I assume it's like everything else we buy...we have a choice of what we buy and use and if something sells, then the company makes a profit.  It's all about making profit if a company is in business.  We don't have to purchase what they sell!  This is why we should read labels and make informed decisions, not only for ourselves, but for our charges as well.  In other words, just because there is food out there that is bad for us, doesn't mean we avoid it!

Eight in One may be a well known company, although I've never heard of it, but this doesn't mean their products are any good.  I'd recommend you not buy their products if you are unhappy with the ingredients they contain. There are lots of companies that sell products for birds, but don't have any knowledge of parrots...it's all about what sells and makes money for them.

Answer
Hi again, Tony.  Yes, parrots do need baths on a regular basis.  In fact, some take baths daily, which a lot of parrots prefer if they have water available.  A "bath spray" is not necessary.  Simply give the parrot a dish of water and/or spray mist the bird with hot water in a spray mist bottle...it's not necessary to add anything to the water.

Just because a company sells something for pets, doesn't mean it's good for the pets!  It's all about profit in most cases.
