Cockatiels and cold weather

Question
Hi Dianna, am a new cockatiel owner, have a pair for about 8 months. Live in east Texas and am wondering about winter temps. I normally keep my house on the cool side (70-72 degrees) in the day and usually have the heat off and/or windows open. My tiels are in my bedroom and I am concerned about the temp for them. Also I normally keep my ceiling fans on in warm weather with the a/c going and I am concerned about the cool air on them. I have been letting myself be warmer than I want for fear of making them sick. Also, what about misting in cold weather? Any info you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks, Sharon

Answer
Hello Sharon and thank you for your post.

70-72 degrees is very accpetable for cockatiels, although they do like it a little warmer.  As long as thay are not in a cold draft, they should be fine.  Please keep in mind that cockatiels are tropical birds, and they like the warmer weather.
If the house is 70-72 degrees, it will be safe to mist them down, but again, do not let them be in a cold draft.  They might catch pneumonia if they are in a cold draft.
They can be in iar conditioning as long as they are not right in front of the vents, and the ceiling fan is fine to have on for air circulation, just please remember to turn off any ceiling fans when you let them out of the cage for exercise.  They will fly into it and get killed.

Good luck and God Bless.
