egg layin lovebird

Question
My lovebird just lay her first (non-fertile) egg. She is an only bird and I REALLY don't want this to continue. She lets me near her cage and is not aggressive but I worry so about any of my many pets and hope that if I stop giving her paper to shred it may extinguish the potential egg laying process. She has never lay before and we just recently put a piece of paper in her cage . WRONG I wish I hadn't now . /worried sick "Mom"

Answer
Hello Ree.  Thank you for posting with me.
Unfortunately she has started her cycle of laying eggs, and this is nature.  She will probably lay 3-5 more before she is done with this clutch.  The best thing that you can do is to let her sit on her eggs until SHE is ready to abandon them, or until she starts to push them away.
She will probably lay at least one clutch of eggs a year, maybe more.  It all depends on the bird.
Taking the paper out of her cage may only aggravate her and she may become aggressive.  She needs to be able to make her nest.
Don't worry, this is natural, and unless she lays eggs excessively, she will be fine in a few weeks.
I had a lovebird that laid 2 clutches a year, and even though they were unfertile, she'd become protective over them.  She even took several chunks out of my hands while I was just giving her fresh food and water.
As I stated, let her have her eggs until SHE is ready to quit sitting on them.  If you take her eggs away from her right away, she may continue to lay more to fulfill her "Mothering Instincts".

Good luck and God Bless.
