Question
I have a new budgie who seems to spend alot of time "pacing" backwards and fowards along her perch or seemingly trying to get out, climbing along the wire of the cage. We do have alot of native birds outside that she can hear. What can i do to alleviate this behaviour.

Answer
Hi, Kaz,

If this is a new budgie, the bird may be "pacing" because she is still under stress from the move to her new environment and new people.  If the bird can see/hear the birds outside, she may be reacting to these sounds and what she hears.  Birds don't know what glass is, so when your bird sees other birds outside, your bird thinks they are able to get to her and/or she can get to them.  Since birds prefer other birds to humans, she may be trying to get out of her cage and get to them for companionship.  If you want to help alleviate this behavior, move the cage so she can't see outside.  If this isn't the problem, you may need to give your new bird some time to get used to you and her new environment before expecting too much.  Perhaps the bird just wants out of its cage if the bird is used to being let out of her cage previouly.  Is the cage big enough?  This may also be part of the problem.
