Question
my indianringnecks have been mating the last couple of days how long before she should lay her first egg, also what would you use for nesting material we have shredded sawdust and bark is this ok

Answer
Melanie,

Every Indian Ringneck couple is different.  Some are very efficient in preparing the nest, mating, and laying eggs.  Others will play with the nest and even mate and never have babies.  Others will prepare the nest, mate, lay eggs and then desert the eggs or babies.  Generally I find the time between mating and egg laying is also dependent on the experience of the parents.  So, a more mature pair who has bred several times will take less time getting down to the business of laying eggs, while the younger, inexperienced ones may take several weeks after the mating begins.

I don't know where you are from, but if you have untreated pine shavings, I find these are the best materials for your nestbox.  Make sure to put plenty in.  They just love digging in their boxes; it's part of what gets them ready for breeding.

Good luck,

Cindy
