Question

Troy
Hello I have a 6 month old weanling colt. He is halter broke and leads well.  I am starting to introduce him to new things. I am having a problem combing his mane. He tenses up and tries to run away while he is tied.  Do you have any sugestions?

Answer
hi ashley
oh my gosh he is so cute!!!! well he is just a baby he is not familiar with that pulling on his neck. the best thing to do is get him used to it by running your fingers through his mane and pull on it a little bit. then once he is good with that comb his mane gently and gradually work your way up to brushing it how you normally would. also try to pet him along his mane to help him get used to things being in that area. never try to teach him to accept this for to long. only do 5 min sessions at a time. after 5 min he is not paying attention so do it for 5 min only then wait a little bit and do another 5 min. just keep introducing it to him. if you can, do this 6-7 times a day or as much as you can. the more time he experiences it the more familiar he will be with it and wont freak out and think something is eating him. when he tenses up just talk to him and pet him and then back off. tell him he is a good boy for not pulling back and then re approach him and start again.
good luck and keep me updated on his progress. if you have any other questions just let me know.
