Yawning

Question
Hello,
I have recently bought a lovely 4 year old Irish Cob type.  He is currently 14.3
and has a rather high bottom and large head.  Can you tell me what age this
type of horse grows until?
Another issue that has had many of us puzzled by.  When Harry sees the
bridle, he begins to yawn 4 or 5 times.  Is this a sign of nerves or stress?  We
don't work Harry hard, currently doing hacking and a little schooling.

Any ideas?

Thank you for taking the time to read my silly questions.

Answer
Hello Louise,

Equines can grow up to the age of 7 or 8.  My 8 year old mare grew a whole inch between 7 and 8.

The yawning may be a way to communicate with you his attitude about the work that is coming.  This same mare of mine, when she sees the bridle, sticks out her head and lifts her upper lip as though she is smelling something very bad.  I know it is her way of telling me, "Do we really have to do this?"

I wouldn't worry about it.

Happy riding,
Dorothy
