Fear of stall from old surgery/sedation

Question
Hi. I ahve an impressive bred quarter horse. We purchased Breeze at a sale. He had had stifle surgery that the vet noticed but moved freely and flexes well. He was shown western pleasure and is quite a big horse.16.2 and about 1400 lbs. Breeze had a 4 cm necrotic area over his jugular vein where he had been obviosly sedated during his recovery. I was looking for a quiet trail horse which he has turned out to be. He is quite a clown. ONE BIG PROBLEM...he will not stay confined alone ina stall or round pen! I did the in and out thing, calming and treating him,ang now being crosstied in the barn for the farrier turns his into a manic. He is field kept and gets along great with the other horses but other than sedation, I would have no way of keeping him in a stall if a medical problem should arise. I love him and waited for my first horse for 46 yrs! He has even shown halter well for me. He is so frighted in the stall..it must have been a real bad memory.

Answer
hi ruth, he just gets nervous in the stall because he cant see another horse. leave him in there all day. even if he paces and screams his head off. he will get over it. same as the cross ties and the round pen. you can also try putting a window in the stall with a buddy. or you can get a mini and put it in the stall with him. good luck
