PERSONALITY CHANGES IN A MARE IN FOAL

Question
Happy New Year!  My pregnant mare seems to be developing a "witchy" personality. Her usual pleasant and calm demeanor seems to be changing into one of a very dominant mare in the herd...pinning her ears back and when I try to rub her tummy, she attempts to "cow" kick.  Is this a normal hormonal change or is there something else going on?  Thanks so much! Best Regards

Answer
Hormonal changes in pregnant mares is very normal, however it is normally the opposite of what you are describing.

Personally, I have only known 2 other mares that have foaled and turned out WORSE than before.

It could be that your mare is just getting sensitive during her pregnancy, or this could be the personality she displays after she foals. It is really hard to tell from this end of the computer!

The only thing I can suggest is try and maintain your position as alpha and hope that she is just hitting a sensitive period!
