On the subject of horse breeding....am I making the right decision?

Question
Hi Michelyn:)
I would like your opinion as to my decision on purchasing a 6 yr old mare from a very reputable and successful and accomplished horse owner.  I am buying this mare sight unseen, minus the 2 photos I have of her.  Her breeding speaks for itself, being an own daughter of Some Dasher Dash For Cash and a granddaughter on her dam's side of Raise Your Glass.  I think she's well worth the $3500 I will have eventually spent on her, as I'm making $200 weekly payments on her until paid off.  In your opinion, does she seem worth the money and would I be able to recoup some of the money by breeding her to a well-chosen stud in the future, I'm thinking along the lines of Easy Jet, if I can find a stud closely enough bred from him.
I also have an opportunity to buy a very nice 10yr gelding from a different source who is also from popular lines. He's a grandson of Easy Six and Extra Easy, as well as a great-grandson of LadyBugs Moon on his dam's side, and they're asking for $2100, allowing me to put down $400 on him and have him in my possession until paid.  I'm half-heartedly thinking I may ask the mare's owner to retract my payments on her (it's only $600 so far) and trying to get the money back to put down on him, but since he's a gelding, I lose any money forever, since I can't breed him.  What is your opinion on this as I'm trying to be reasonable and do what my husband and I agreed, that I could have a horse if it made financial sense and if our money could be made back at some point!
Thanks, Autumn

Answer
I think that buying a mare will be more profitable then a gelding, because selling foals makes money but remember that if complications arise during breeding and foaling you could end up paying alot more. Buying a gelding is good if you plan to show him but you can't breed which is the downside. I breed horses and the only reason we have geldings is for beggginers and trail rides.
