13(?) year old Standardbred mare

Brand

Brand A friend of mine just pulled a mare from a kill pen without much information. She's supposedly a 13 year old Standardbred mare. She does have a lip tattoo that is illegible... She also has a freeze brand on the right side of her neck... It reads 2-12. Do you have any knowledge as to what this means? We are both very curious! Thank you for your time! :]

Hi Danielle.
If she's only 13 the lip tattoo should be clearly legible. I suspect she is quite a bit older--lip tattoos haven't been used in many years. The freeze brand on her neck must be a farm thing. Standardbred freeze brands and/or tattoos never have a dash. They are a combination of numbers and letters, and one of the letters would indicate the year she was foaled. For example, all Standardbreds foaled in 2007 have the letter E in their brand. 2008 would be the letter F, and so on down the line. An example of a freeze brand or tattoo would be 9E4313.
If there's anyway you can possibly make out her lip tattoo and she's not older than 30, I can run the tattoo and see what comes up.
