Weird shedding

Question
Hello,

My 7 year old gelding was moved a few months ago from his dirt pen into a large, grassy paddock. He had some weight issues (he was losing a lot), but he has recently been kept on a steady diet of 12% feed and alfalfa, so he is slowly but steadily gaining weight again.

I wasn't sure if this is a cause for his shedding, but something is causing him to lose hair in large patches. In places, his coat is fine, but in others he's almost bald! It doesn't seem to be bothering him, but he will itch on you if you stand near him.

Our vet didn't say anything about it, but I would really like to know your thoughts.

Thank you!

Answer
Dear emma,
There are many resons why he is loosing hair, but it could be sores, ringworm, dandruff, he could just be itching until his hair falls out. I would seriously get another vet out to look at him, one with a good reputation, something should be done about it. It could also be shedding his winter coat if you live in a colder climate. I can't say much more because i haven't seen a picture or his behaviour, or if there are any other markings (bumps, hives etc.)
