horse shoulder

Question
There was a question you answered 9/17/2007 about shoulder pain. Do you know what the outcome or findings were on that horse? I have a horse with similar symptoms and he is definitely painful when I move the RT shoulder back, more so than the left side. Taking either leg forward has no objection. Have knowledge to understand detail answer.

Answer
Nancy,

No, I haven't heard back from the other questioner regarding the shoulder pain.  It sounds like your horse has a dislocated shoulder.  One way to check for yourself is square the horse up and stand right in front of him and look at the points of the shoulders.  If they are not exactly even and appear exactly the same then the shoulder is out.  The only fix for this is chiropractic adjustment.  This can happen from a number of things - running into something, stepping in a depression, getting up and having the leg slip forward and hyper-extend the shoulder - it happens.  I would also suggest some bodywork, massage, for the horse because the muscles are often in spasms and need to be worked out.

If this is the case with your horse that is what you need to do.  Find an equine chiropractor and if possible an equine massage therapist.  They can help the horse.

Good luck, let me know how this comes out.
