QuestionI own a 22 month old KMSHA/RMHA gelding, that is constantly getting into things. Over the summer he got his head stuck in something(even after several thourough pasture/stall checks we couldn't find the culprit) and tore the hide off of both of his temples, much to my chagrin. Now, he has a lump on his left ear, just before the tip. It's roughly the size of a peanut. It has caused the tip of his ear to turn up, and a small amount of hair is gone right around the swelling. It's not warm, it is solid not gushy, and doesn't seem to cause pain when squeezed gently. I bought him to be my lifelong trail-buddy so the cosmetic aspects don't worry me as much, though I have shown him in local shows(and he's beat mature stallions in halter!). Mostly, I worry about what this may turn into. At first I thought it was a fly bite, but it hasn't gone away. What do you think?
Answerhi jennifer,
i would say it is most likely a sist. you can have the vet come out and cut it open and remove the liquid. other then that im not sure what it could be. it cant be a small abcess because it would be sore to the touch so i would say an sist. have a vet look at it if it bothers you that much and he will remove the liquid. if it is a sist then you really dont need to worry about it though. a sist is just a build up of fluid. it doesnt bother the horse. good luck
