Lower Leg

Question
I am an eventer. My biggest problem is dressage. I can not seem to have a firm lower leg and keep my leg under me, especially with longer stirrups. Do you have any excersises or something that can strengthen my lower leg?

Answer
Dear Nicole:
I can suggest a couple of things - you will sort of need to determine what "fits" your situation best.
You indicate that you think you lack lower leg strength. This may or may not be the case - but I have rarely seen eventers with a muscular weakness - perhaps you are simply refering to a weak position? If you think that you actually lack muscle tone (which I doubt is your problem) you can work out in the weight room on machines that specifically target the lower leg. A less expensive variation is to do stretches on the edge of a stair or a thick phone book.
Assuming however it is a weak position that you refer to, I urge you to ride with no stirrups at all for at least 20 minutes of every ride (at w/t and c). This will help you to develop a centre of balance that is further back than you are used to when riding in two point position. If you have access to an arena with mirrors- they will assist you in developing a feel for when your lower leg is below your hips. In the absence of mirrors, you can get a friend to help you by letting you know when your leg is out of position.
It may seem simplistic, but it has worked for riders to improve their seats for generations and if you stick to it, it should work for you as well. Remember however, this will require time, dedication and practice.
Best wishes,
