suitable flooring in the barn stalls

Question
Hello, I have heard many different opinions on what is suitable for type of flooring in the barn stalls. Mostly, it seems people think it's bad for a horses feet. I've heard that standing on a cement floor, after months or a couple years a horse will go lame. Then, I've also heard that it's ok as long as the bedding in the stall is thick enough to make it a little cushony. Personally, I've always thought the best flooring is wood with a decent layer of straw for bedding. I'd like to know what your opinions are on this.

Answer
Hello Toni,
There are so many options to go with when deciding what type of flooring you want.  Personally, I would stay away from concrete for a horses stall.  I don't doubt that a horse wouldn't go lame after spending time on concrete for hours.  What I have for stall flooring is dirt.  We put stall mats over the dirt floor, then we either use shavings or straw depending on the horse. Wood with straw is a good choice.  Whenever you do stall flooring or anything for that matter for your horse, I think what would be the most comfortable for them.  Any questions of clarification don't hesitate to ask. :)
