Brachial Plexus nerve injury

Question

Frisky's bad shoulder
I have a 9 year old Thoroughbred stallion who about three weeks ago rolled in an indoor arena and got up extremely lame on his left front leg. Three vets have looked at him and they all believe it to be a shoulder injury. X-rays of the lower shoulder and elbow were clean. The most sensible diagnosis thus far to me has been that he has injured his brachial plexus nerves. His shoulder appears dropped and he stands with his front leg bent at the knee. Not really bearing weight on that leg unless we push the leg underneath him, then he will stand for up to ten minutes on his own on it. We have been doing daily massages, short hand walks, stretching, and hydro therapy on it. We have also been applying a sweat to it every so often. I'm wondering if you have ever dealt with such an injury and if so what types of therapies have you found to be helpful? We are located in Southeastern Minnesota. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Answer
Jessica I am so sorry to hear about Frisky's injury.  This has to be pretty scary.  Wish I could say I've seen this before but I haven't.  I did find some really interesting information for you about this injury and how it can be related to other nerve injuries.  I think you'll find it really interesting even though it has a whole lot of medical jargon in it.  It will give you different things to look for on Frisky to help determine more about what's going on.  Here's the link ...  http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/101400.htm

If you have questions about what you find in here, please let me know and I'll try to help plus I'd love to hear how Frisky is doing down the road if you get a chance to write me back again.
