sitting right behind the withers bareback

Question
hello Lyn. yesterday, my instructor taught me how to ride a horse bareback. when i mounted on a 3 year old filly, i sat right behind the withers since the spine is dense over there. was my seating position correct?

Answer
Rohit,

Please be aware that a horse's spine is not fully mature until they are 8 yrs. old based on a study by Deb Bennett, DVM.  As far as the spine being more dense in the wither area that's news to me.  Where you sat is pretty much the place to sit when bareback simply because the horse is slimmest there so easier to hold with your legs.
