Question
I have a 5 year old percheron mare. She is very soft at her english riding and does perfecty on her canter. but when i throw a western on her she goes crazy. when i get her into a canter, she bucks and takes off on me all the time. I went to the saddle fitter and the western fits perfectly on her so I have no idea what the problem is.

could you please help me,

thank you,
Abigail

Answer
Abigail,

Please remember that she is a mare and also a youngster. I suspect she's objecting to the weight of the saddle, the greater area it covers and, if you are using a flank cinch, that too.  Mares can be very, very opinionated and this sounds like a case of that.  I suggest you put it on her and go back to doing some lunge line work with it on her to start with.  Sort of go back to step 1, introduce her to it the same way you did the English saddle.  She may never like it, but can learn to accept it if you insist.  Mares do better if you ask rather than demand of them.  Sort of like you, you're a girl so you should be able to understand.  She may be like some people and not like change.  It's up to you to figure it out.  She's yound and will have temper issues that you'll just have to work through.  Good luck!!  Mares, especially alpha-type ones, can be very challenging to work with but absolutely loyal and will give you 110% when you ask it of them.  I bet she would be a good dressage prospect.
