Question
hello, today i had been to riding club. i mounted on a kathiawari filly and enjoyed the ride. when i checked her to judge her age, she had only 4 incisors, she didnt had the 3rd incisor on one side and the 3rd incisor on the other side. when i asked my riding instructor, he told me that kathiawari horses are different from thoroughbreds and their teeth arrangement. is he right? if yes, may i know why the equine teeth arrangement differs from breed to breed?

Answer
Rohit,

I will admit I had never heard of the Kathiawari breed before today and I did a little research on them before answering your question.  I could find nothing about a difference in the number of teeth present in this breed vs other breeds of horses.  It was not mentioned on the website about the horses and I am wondering if you were just riding a very young horse who had not yet had the teeth erupt.  Since they are considered the oldest, pure breed in India you would probably do better to contact someone in the registry about them directly.  I have never heard of any equine breed not having 6 incisor teeth in both the upper and lower jaw.  This applies to both horses and donkeys.  I surmised from the website that they start riding these horses at a very young age.

I wish I could be more helpful but this is sort of outside of my realm of expertise.  As I said before you would probably get the best answer from a breeder of these horses.  There are a number of associations in India that should be able to answer your question better than I can.  Those listed were:
KATHIAWARI HORSE SOCIETY, KATHIAWARI & MARWARI HORSE BREEDERS CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY LTD. - GONDAL, and PORBANDAR HORSE BREEDERS ASSOCIATION.  The information on the website was from Rajesh Jadeja, Hon. Secretary of the Kathiawari Horse Society of India, and they should be able to help you better than I can.  This is the website I used:
