horse starts choking around 1/2 mile

Question
I just recently bought a 4yr old pacer offspring of No Nukes. before I bought her 1st 5 races were good, ran 1:55 showed some talent. 2nd 5 not good, no places in the money. My trainier saw something in her that we could work with so bougfht her privately fro $4500. Long story short, we notice choking sounds around 1/2 mile. had her scoped right after, nothing found. Read article on ADAF symptoms were exact. Had her scoped again this time vet said swollen jugular probally caused some time ago from bad injection which is causing pressure and closing off air when she excerts. Now I have 2 possible scenerios. Do I take her for tests, treadmill etc, to test her for ADAF and possible laser surgery costs about $3500, horse in sound no other health problems, beautiful, and may have some exceelent potential, but will not do anything with this condition. You have any advice of what to od. PS, this is my first horse. Thanks!

Answer
Hi John.
ADAF? Active Duty Air Force? (Just kidding. I know you are referring to a displaced airway!)

It's really hard for me to comment without ever seeing the horse race or her lines. Do you trust your trainer? Does he or she feel the horse has the potential to invest another $3500 in and possibly lay up for awhile? If it was my horse, I believe I'd try either a W tongue control bit or a Cornell Collar first in an attempt to stabilize the airway. If there was some improvement but not quite enough, I would definitely try the surgery.

Another thing to consider is that No Nukes is THE premiere brood mare sire. Without knowing what the bottom half of her pedigree looks like, you have an excellent chance to get some very nice race horses from her!

Best of luck with whatever you decide!
