Question
I've owned a 7 year old mare for 1 year. Do you have any knowledge about why she is lactating? She definitely is not pregnant.

Answer
Dear Lorraine,
It is not unheard of for a mare to be lactating when she is not pregnant. If there are any foals around she may have a mothering instinct but if not get a check-up on your mare it could be a infectious diesease like mastitis, or a pituatary disorder. If there is no health problem with her, some mares live with lactation normally. There is not good treatments to change the horome signal that makes her produce milk.
