Question
HI mEG JUST TO SETTLE A DEBATE I HAVE BEEN HAVING, A FEW YEARS AGO MY VET ADVISED ME TO ADD USED VEGETABLE OIL FROM MY COOKING TO PUT WEIGHT AND CONDITION ON MY AGED HORSE, WHICH I DID WITH NO ILL EFFECTS, I HAVE JUST BEEN TALKING TO ANOTHER HORSE OWNER WHO SUGGESTS ITS WRONG AND THAT THERE IS ACRYLAMIDE IN IT BY USE OF OLD OIL, BUT SURELY MY VET WOULD NOT HAVE SUGGESTED THIS, JUST CURIOUS TO KNOW Anne

Answer
Hi!

Thanks for your question and I hope I can be of some help.

I first must say, this is the first time I have heard about using vegetable oil. I know that it is great mixed with essential oils for sore muscles, and for use on leather, but not about feeding it.

But I did some research, and I asked some questions, and I found that that it is a good way to put some weight on horses. It's high in protein, mixed with the right other ingredients. It's suggested for older horses, and also for horses who won't eat a lot. Although, from what I know, they have used fresh vegetable oil. I haven't heard about using older oil.

If you are really concerned I would ask your vet, but personally I don't see anything wrong with it. But be sure to be on the look out just in case it might.

I hope that helps!
