Question
We have a beautiful paint filly that was born on easter.  She is just starting to get worked with do to problems with the mothers nature when u are around the foal. Over the weekend I was able to get her on a lead rope and rub her down as well as brush her some.  Not with her cooperation ofcoarse but we still did it. I have a few questions that I would like your opinion on. This is our first foal. Is it better to have her and mom in a smaller pen since the mom is having trouble putting the weight back on? We have heard yes but others say no because then the baby doesn't have room to stretch her legs and run. Also I have contacted our vet but he is on vacation for the next week so is unable to come back until then. We live in a small town with only one. The foal has somehow managed to do something to her left eye and is oozing green puss from it we cleaned it up with water as best as we could.  She also has an open wound on her head above her eye that is ozzing as well this one we cleaned up and put iodine on but is there anyother home treatments that we can use until the vet gets back? We moved her immediately since we are unsure how this happened to a new pen.

Answer
Hello Candace! I think its fine to keep them in there normal pen but make sure it's just momma and the baby out there don't turn them out with other horses. If you wish to you could offer the momma free choice of hay horses can't have too much hay but they can have too much grain. I would also suggest feeding your mare Strategy it's a high protiene pellet feed and has worked wonders for me. You can also add beat pulp to her feed just make sure you soak it in water so it dosent form and impaction in her stomach. As for the foal eye keep rinsing it as offten as you can you can even move her eye lids down(for the bottom one) and up (for the top one) just like you would your own to make sure you have gotten all of the dirt out. The wound above her eye also make sure you keep extremley clean after you get it cleaned out try to tape a bandage over it to try to keep dirt out. You dont want to mess with an eye wound too much without consulting a vet first especially if you think the eye may be injured also.

hope ive helped you!
