Jumping a horse recovering from a fracture

Question
I have a 5 year old thoroughbred that when I got him had some lameness issues, after MANY trips to the vet and money, we discovered he had a small fracture on his fetlock. We had it splinted and it healed up really nice. I started working him slowly doing a lot of hand walking/trotting. Now we've moved on to trotting and cantering undersaddle. We've also done a lot of poles and cavellettis. He hasn't had any discomfort (he's not one to hide it!!) since we started, no swelling, or heat. It's been a year since his fracture. When do you think he can start small jumps? He has been cleared by a vet to start. thanks!

Answer
Hello Stefanie,

Now.  If you trust your vet and your horse, don't wait any longer.  Small jumps and gymnastics at first and monitor his gait.  Any hitch in his get-along...pull back.  If no obvious lameness, have fun.

I had a mare that had a hairline fracture of the rear cannon bone and after 3 months she was healed.  She loves to jump.

Best wishes,
Dorothy
