Question
my mare is a mustang that is very nervous and has trust issuses.she is due in late october early november.i would like to know if i should try to be close to help her or just stay back.i dont want to make her hurt herself or the foal.she does run when trying to be caught and has to be penned up to catch.when in a pen she is fine but very jumpy.i do have her at home now in a half acre lot so i can watch her but i am worried that if she needs help im not going to be able to.should i keep her penned up or let her do her own thing?thank you

Answer
You should continue to work with her and improve her trust issues on a daily basis.  She needs to know she can trust you which may or may not show until she needs you.  Since she is used to being in the wild it is best to allow her to  have her foal in the open where she is most comfortable.  If she has problems and needs your help, she will not be able to fight you and if you have worked with her daily she will remember that you are trust worthy.  It will be important for you to develop a repore with the foal right away or the mare will teach it to be afraid of you as well.
