Question A little background: I paid $600.00 for a 5 yr old Paint horse that was fed dogfood for 2 yrs, this happened over 2 yrs ago so he's been on regular food for a good amount of time although I feel you must know that the other horse that was with him did die. I've had him since 08/21/06; One Vet/Chiropractor thinks the horse has EPM sees uneven, weak hindquarters, $120.00 vet fee; another vet is then called for a second opinion; he does similar tests and says he doesn't think so, said he would do a blood test if I wanted but he doesn't see anything obvious. This last vet is very well respected and been around a bit longer so I thought I was Ok to go forward with his training. He told me that anyone could find something wrong with a horse if they looked hard enough and that no horse was all even everywhere and I would be better off spending my money on a good trainer, another $130.00 vet fee.
A farrier came out today to balance his feet before I sent him to a local trainer, he bucks. Well the farrier said he was just offering his opinion but thinks he might possibly have EPM also (he is Associates w/the first vet of course) but says that he walks on his right back foot "heavy-footed" ... says his right hip rotates awkwardly, I don't see that either!! I am no stranger to a horse walking in an 'OFF' way I muck stalls for a larger ASB stabel here but I cannot see any of these problems they see and of course now I am hyper-focusing on his hindquarters trying to see what they do. Then yesterday I saw him stop suddenly while he was vigorously eating and look like he was going to fall asleep all of the sudden which is odd for him so I thought OH NO....then he just started eating again. See now i'm over analyzing everything he does.
How many more Vet opinions do I seek, how much more money do I spend on opinions? I guess I could have almost paid for the $500 Spinal fluid test by now.....jeeze! I have kids and a family. Yes I do know the only sure way is a Spinal fluid test but I don't have the money....
I called K-State and talked with a Dr. there and she said she was confused why I was calling because my horse has no obvious physical signs he never stumbles, looks unbalanced or any of the other EPM symptoms. I have been doing ground training EVERYDAY since I got him, I have seen him every single day!! I told her all the opinions/stories and she said just watch him and that I could get a blood test but 50% of horses will test positive for it that way and that does not mean they have it.......
Bottom Line: Is it possible for me to wait another 2-4 months and watch over him to see if anything further develops and if nothing does COULD IT STILL LATER DEVELOP or could I be OK? I'm not going to hold your opinion against you.....everyone I know that's had a horse with EPM say its very, very obvious physically and it comes on fast. The Dr. at K-State said the only consistent thing about the disease is that it is not consistent......WOW!!!

AnswerI AM NOT GOING TO OFFER ANOTHER OPINION, AS I'VE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO AVOID EPM AND AM NO EXPERT IS THIS AREA.
I DO KNOW THAT VETS AT THE TRACK WILL PUT A HORSE ON THE EPM MEDICATION IF THEY SUSPECT THE HORSE HAS IT. IF IT WORKS, THEY CONCLUDE THE HORSE HAS IT, IF NOT THEY LOOK FOR SOMETHING ELSE.
