Question
How do you get a mama horse away from its baby, because we can't get a haulter on the mama so its really hard??

Answer
Dear Marie

You don't mention anything about your facilities or whether or not your mare has had any training or handling. It is now May. Can I assume you are talking about this year's foal?

If this is this year's foal, separating them is going to be more difficult, and possibly dangerous than just catching your mare.  IF she has had training and is not totally wild, you may be able to herd her and her foal into a small corral or enclosure and work on catching her from there.

If they are in a large pasture and you don't have a corral, I suggest you build one from portable pipe fencing. If you are going to have horses, you need a safe containment area for many reasons.  It may be time to make the investment.

Leaving the gate open and feeding your mare in the enclosure will get her used to being inside.  Inside the smaller enclosure, she should be catchable if she has had any past training.  Many mares are very protective of their foals and can become hard to catch with a new foal at their side.

Good luck.  I hope this responsible is applicable.  You gave me so little information to go on, I had to guess.
