Question
Is it wise to free longe your horse. I've been working with horses on a longe line and wanted to free longe, but I've been told that it gives the horses bad habits and can make them skittish towards people and things.  Is that true?

Answer
Dear Lynda:
I belive that almost anything that has to do with the training and handling of horses is inextricably connected to who is doing the work. I have never had any of the issues you describe with free lunging my horses - BUT...
1. I always make sure the area where I work them is safe - this means footing, fencing, free of distractions, dogs, children etc.etc.
2. I ensure my horse is wearing proper leg protection,
3. I make sure the horse is familiar with the area ON the lunge (or the lead) BEFORE I free lunge
4. I do not chase after my horses or "shoo" them with plastic bags etc. - I use the same voice commands and whip re-enforcement as when I use the line.
Often free lunging is the only way to condition a young horse- as circles put too much stress on growing bone, tendons and ligaments.
