Question
I use to show in the training level dressage classes about 7 years ago.  A friend of mine was killed from a kick to the head after coming off her horse while going over a jump.  I sold my horse and haven't been on until last month.  I bought a 7yr paint mare who is 16 hands.  She has been used as a lesson horse in Hunter jumping.  I want to use her in Dressage and I want to start slow so I can get comfortable with riding again. I would like to show her in a walk trot dressage class and then after I build up more trust the training level class. Can you give me some advise to what I can be working on for the next few months.  The trainers I have found teach jumping and western.  I don't want to trailer her and take lessons at other barns until I work on my seat more and get to know her better.  Thanks

Answer
Dear Russtina,
I am very sorry about your friend but glad that you have decided not to exclude horses from your life as a result of her tragic accident.
A good trainer is a good trainer and as long as you make your goals and objectives clear and stick to them- either the jumper or the western coaches should be able to help you. Since I have no way of knowing what you horse can or cannot do, nor your own current level of ability- trying to offer you specific schooling/training exercises here would be a waste of your time.
Even though it sounds as though you were an accomplished rider; seven years is a LONG time for anyone to be out of the saddle and I think you would be wise to take some lessons again- even if they are not on your own horse. You could take what you have learned in your lessons home with you to practice there. You should also be able to find a coach who will come to you for lessons.
It's too bad that you couldn't have found a horse that had a dressage background and you wouldn't have had to couple a re-school along with your own "re-education."
Best wishes and congratulations on getting involved with horses again.
Sincerely,
S. Evans
