Stud colt kicking

Question
I just bought 2 roan colts. A 7 month old red roan filly and a 6 month old blue roan stud colt. How soon can he be gelded. He already has starting kicking. What is a good way to break that habit when he isnt really halter broke and leading yet? I can get a halter on him with a little work but he isnt happy about it. It seems to me he wants to kick when I am working the filly. He trys to put himself between her and me.

Answer
Dina,

Depending upon the weather where you are, the sooner you get him gelded the better.  He's already exhibiting stallion behavior by trying to show dominance and possession of the filly.  They should be kept separately, until you get him gelded.  The reason I say depending upon the weather, since I don't know where you are geographically, it should be cooler with few/no flies to worry about.  But in any event he should be gelded ASAP.

You would also benefit from some round pen work with him.  If you don't have one you can improvise with a small paddock and boards across the corners.  If not familiar with round pen work you would do well to get some of the videos on it that are available.  I especially like Pat Parelli's work.  You can read books but the visual is much better.  You've got 2 youngsters to train and both you and them would benefit from the videos.  He desperately needs to learn some respect now before he gets too big and can become hazardous to work around.  You'd be surprised the results you can get in a few hours work in a round pen.

But get them apart right away before you get hurt.
