Question
Do horses eat acorns? I pass the pastures where the Memphis
mounted patrol horses are kept. I've talked to the manager, a policeman, and he said I was welcome to bring them treats. I know they like apples and carrots, but I have 30,000 acorns falling right now and was wondering it the horses ate them. I know deer and squirrels do, but what about horses? What other things could I bring them for a treat?

Answer
   Hi Janet,
Some horses appear to like acorns, while others don't, but the problem is that acorns are regarded as being moderately poisonous for horses. It is very unlikely that small amounts would do any harm, but personally speaking I would prefer not to give them at all.
Apples and carrots are the most commonly used treats, but other root vegetables such as turnips and their relatives (swedes etc.), parsnips, beetroot may be appreciated.
I hope this answers your query, but you are  welcome to get back to me if you would like further information.
