Question
my 8yr twh foaled in april.  its now sept and she is not gaining any weight back, you can see her ribs and hips.  i bought her last year, she was thin then, but i was told she had just weaned a foal.  to my surprise when i bought her she was pregnant again.  this is her 3rd foal, but i dont know if they were back to back.  right now where she is boarded she gets 2 scoops omelene 300 and 2 scoops sweet feed along with a mare supplement (as instructed per vet).  she gets fed twice a day, so this feed is a days worth.  he has not been separated from her yet.  we plan on weaning him this week.  they are in a pasture with very little to graze on, but do have round bailed hay.  what would you suggest i feed her to help her gain back the weight.  i would estimate she weights about 800-900 lbs and 16.1h.

Answer
hi Karen,
congratulations on getting a baby. your mare is skinny because the foal is basically sucking all the nutrients and vitamins out of her body. go ahead and wean the baby now. he will be perfectly fine. as far as different feeds go, i would feed your horse rice bran, beet pulp, and a weight building supplement. rice bran is all fat and will put on weight fast. it also will give her a healthy coat. start out feeding her 1-2 handfuls of it for one week. the next week give her 3-4 handfuls. gradually work her up to one scoop in the morning and one scoop in the evening. with the beet pulp just work her up to half a scoop twice a day. pretty much any weight building supplement will do. as long as it is high in carbs your good. if you have any other questions don't be shy to ask. good luck with your mare and weanling. i hope both turn out great for you.
