Question
Hi, i am the owner of a nine year old bay gelding, thoroughbred. I am noticing, he has bold patches on his head, his forehead, and down each side of his nose, it just shows like a dark grey coloured skin, its getting worse every day, what can this  be? and will he's hair re-grow?

Many thanks

Answer
Carrieanne,

I assume you meant bald patches and will proceed accordingly.  As a bay he's going to have black/dark grey skin but I'm wondering why he's losing his hair.  Could he be rubbing his face on something?  If he is then he's probably got some sort of skin problem on his face - could be a lot of things so he needs to be checked out by a vet.  Could be as simple as bugs, sunburn, an allergic reaction, skin mites - there are too many to list here.  Get a vet out to take a good look and possibly some skin scrapings of the affected area.  Once you address whatever is causing the hair to fall out/get rubbed off then I would expect it to regrow with no problem.  Again, the vet can tell you better what to expect once the problem is identified.
