Riding nursing mare

Question
One of my mares had a colt 15 days ago. In your opinion,  when would I be able to resume riding my mare? I have heard it is possible to "dry up" the mare by riding her too soon.  Some believe she should not be ridden until she has weaned the colt. It is possible for me to ride inside my fenceline and allow the colt to follow.  What do you think?

Answer
Dear Joanne,
You can being riding her at about 30 months, although I would advise on bareback riding, and not to much to soon, waking and possibly trotting if the foal is strong enough to keep up with the mother. Be careful some mares get a little nerveous when there foal is with them. Time it to about 30 minutes. Once the foal hits 3 months you may begin some cantering, and using the saddle again. The mare does need time to relax from her ordeal to, Remember until the colt is weaned you should not push your mare to much.
